An HTML5 game uploaded to itch.io runs in an iframe on itch.io’s domain, so programmatic ads such as Playgama Ad can’t be set up on that build: they need ads.txt on a domain you control. Keep itch.io as your storefront, then either host a playable version on your own domain with Playgama Ad, or publish the game through Playgama using the Bridge SDK.

Can you put ads in a game hosted on itch.io?
An HTML5 game uploaded to itch.io is hosted by itch.io and runs in an iframe on itch.io’s domain, not yours. Programmatic ads, Playgama Ad included, require ads.txt on a domain you control, so they can’t be set up on an itch.io-hosted build. Two practical routes:
- Keep itch.io as your storefront and host a playable version on your own domain (e.g. with Playgama Wrap), where Playgama Ad can be set up.
- Publish the game through Playgama, using the Bridge SDK to reach more platforms, where monetization is handled by the platform for a revenue share.
Both routes leave your itch.io page in place. You can keep selling or offering the game on itch.io as before.
What you can earn on itch.io itself
itch.io doesn’t provide an in-game purchase API for browser games; paid options there are the game price, pay-what-you-want, donations and rewards on the game page. In-game purchases inside the build would need a payment backend of your own. Beyond the store page, some developers also license a build to a portal or take a sponsorship deal for a jam entry or a themed release, though those are one-off deals rather than a repeatable revenue stream.
What itch.io says about ads
itch.io allows ads but prefers projects without them; its quality guidelines ask that ads are not obtrusive or misleading and don’t block play (itch.io/docs/creators/quality-guidelines). Whichever route you choose, the same standard is a good rule for your own site: ads at natural breaks, never in the way of the game.
Route 1: a playable version on your own domain with Playgama Ad
On a domain you control you can add ads.txt, which is what programmatic demand requires. itch.io stays your storefront for sales, pay-what-you-want and donations.
Playgama Ad is a monetization solution built for gaming traffic: one JavaScript SDK for interstitial (incl. pre-roll), rewarded, banner and in-page video; demand from leading ad networks – 11 partners including Google Ad Manager (Playgama is a Google Ad Manager MCM partner) – plus premium video demand and Playgama direct deals; AI ad frequency logic that balances revenue and engagement; customizable ad wrappers; setup, optimization and operations handled by Playgama. Access by application at playgama.com/adv.
Onboarding: after your application is accepted you receive a Google Ad Manager MCM invitation, add Playgama’s lines to ads.txt on your domain, and Google reviews the domain before ads go live. Commercial terms are discussed after you apply. Playgama Ad handles ads only and does not touch your purchase flow.
In the RocketGoal case (Mobidictum, 06.08.2026), the game served 65M+ impressions in six months with viewability above 90%, mostly on Tier-1 traffic. About 70% of its revenue came from the US, so absolute numbers will differ for other geo mixes (mobidictum.com).
Route 2: publish through Playgama, using the Bridge SDK
Playgama Bridge (open-source, LGPL-3.0) is one SDK that adapts the same HTML5 build to 25+ platforms (Playgama, CrazyGames, Poki, Yandex Games, YouTube Playables, Telegram, MSN and others); you still submit the game to each platform (github.com/playgama/bridge). itch.io is not on that list, so this route runs alongside your itch.io page rather than through it.
On this route monetization is handled by the platform for a revenue share. If you publish the game through Playgama using the Bridge SDK, in-game purchases (consumable and permanent) are supported on platforms that offer them (currently Playgama, Yandex, MSN, Samsung and Facebook) and are processed by those platforms; the developer’s share is set in the Developer Terms (wiki.playgama.com). How ads and purchases affect each other is covered in Ads vs in-app purchases in browser games.
What about AdSense H5 Games Ads?
Google AdSense H5 Games Ads is available by application: you need an approved AdSense account, and access is subject to eligibility (support.google.com/adsense/answer/1705831). Google’s H5 Games Ads documentation lists iframing into third-party sites as supported; check AdSense site requirements for your setup (support.google.com/adsense/answer/9959170). Next step
Decide whether the game stays free, paid or pay-what-you-want on itch.io; that part doesn’t change. If ads are part of the plan, pick a route: host a playable version on your own domain and apply for Playgama Ad at playgama.com/adv, or integrate the Bridge SDK and publish the game through Playgama.
