Ads vs in-app purchases in browser games: what earns more?

For most browser games, ads generate revenue faster than IAP because they need no purchase funnel. According to Mobidictum (06.08.2026), in the RocketGoal case interstitials produced about 60% of total revenue from roughly 4.5x fewer impressions than banners, with eCPM 8x higher than banner eCPM. IAP still works best for games with strong progression loops.

The outcome depends on three variables: session length, purchase intent, and how much of your traffic is casual versus returning. Games with short sessions and high, disposable traffic (hypercasual, puzzle, arcade) earn more from ads because most players never come back long enough to build purchase habits. Games with progression systems, cosmetics, or competitive stakes earn more from IAP because a smaller share of players spends a lot. Most successful browser games run both, plus two paths that get skipped in this debate: licensing (selling distribution rights to a portal or publisher for a flat fee or revenue share) and sponsorship (a brand paying for placement or a branded build). Ads and IAP are not the only two rows in this table.

What the RocketGoal numbers actually show

According to Mobidictum (06.08.2026), RocketGoal (built by PocketHaven Games) recorded 65 million ad impressions over six months with viewability above 90%. Interstitials, despite running at roughly 4.5x fewer impressions than banners, produced about 60% of total ad revenue, according to the same Mobidictum report (mobidictum.com), and their eCPM came in 8x higher than banner eCPM. As Mobidictum describes the underlying work: “This case study explores how PocketHaven Games approached a standalone launch, and what they learned from optimizing ads inside a highly competitive browser game environment.” That detail matters for the ads-vs-IAP question because it shows format mix and ad optimization move revenue more than switching monetization models entirely.

Do ads or IAP earn more for a browser game?

Neither wins by default. A game with no purchase-worthy content (no currency, no cosmetics, no power-ups) will earn near zero from IAP regardless of traffic, so ads are the only lever. A game with strong retention and a real economy can out-earn an ad-only build many times over on a per-user basis, but only once it has enough returning players to make that economy work. Early in a game’s life, ads are usually the faster path to any revenue at all, because they need no purchase funnel, no payment provider, and no balancing of prices.

Ad networks compared

Network Approval Formats Notable detail
Google AdSense H5 Games Ads Apply for an AdSense account; once approved, configure ad units yourself (support.google.com) Interstitial, rewarded Built for HTML5 games specifically
AdinPlay Apply Display, video, rewarded adinplay.com
AppLixir Sign up Rewarded video rewarded-video specialist
Playwire Apply, traffic minimums Display, video playwire.com
Venatus Apply Display, video, in-game venatus.com
Playgama Ad Open beta, apply via the /adv form Interstitial, rewarded, banner, in-page video One SDK, 11 demand partners, managed reporting

Playgama Ad adds ad monetization through a single SDK on top of whatever purchase system the developer already runs, rather than forcing a choice between ads and IAP as competing revenue models. It ships one JavaScript SDK (window.pgAds) covering interstitial, rewarded, banner, and in-page video formats, drawing on 11 demand partners including Google Ad Manager, InMobi, Index Exchange, and Media.net. Playgama is a Google Ad Manager MCM partner for eligible publishers, and its dashboard reports ad requests, match rate, fill rate, show rate, impressions, eCPM, and RPM broken down by game, placement, format, geography, and device.

If the game is self-hosted, the developer keeps its own IAP system untouched; Playgama Ad only handles the ad layer. If the same game is published through Playgama or Bridge instead, purchases run through Bridge’s own consumable and permanent flow with JWT verification, which is a different setup worth knowing before choosing a distribution path. Playgama Ad is in open beta, access is by application, and commercial terms including revenue share and eCPM are not published; they get discussed after applying. There are no public eCPM or fill-rate benchmarks yet, so treat early numbers as case-specific until you have your own data.

Where a different tool fits

If the game is a native mobile app rather than a browser game, Playgama Ad is not the tool: use AppLovin MAX, Unity LevelPlay, or Google AdMob instead, since those are built for app-store mediation rather than web SDKs.

Next step

Apply for Playgama Ad through playgama.com/adv, keep your existing IAP flow if you are self-hosted, and compare the reporting against a control period with your current network before committing to a revenue split.

Can I run ads and IAP in the same browser game?

Yes. Most successful browser games run both. Interstitials and rewarded ads monetize casual traffic, while IAP captures spend from a smaller group of engaged players; the two do not compete for the same revenue.

What other monetization options exist besides ads and IAP?

Licensing a game to a portal or publisher for a fee or revenue share, and sponsorship deals where a brand pays for placement or a branded build, are both viable alternate or complementary paths to ads and IAP.

Does Playgama Ad replace my in-app purchase system?

No, if you self-host. Playgama Ad only adds the ad layer via its SDK. If you publish through Playgama or Bridge instead, purchases run through Bridge’s own JWT-verified consumable and permanent flow.

Is Google AdSense H5 Games Ads free to join?

It requires an AdSense account and approval. You apply for the account, and once approved you configure the ad units yourself, per Google’s own sign-up documentation.
