Smelting Gold Ore
The most common way to make a gold ingot is by smelting gold ore in a furnace. You’ll need to mine gold ore blocks using an iron pickaxe or better – stone and wooden pickaxes won’t work. Gold ore generates between Y-levels -64 and 32, with the highest concentration around Y-level -16.
Place your gold ore in the top slot of a furnace and add fuel (like coal, wood, or charcoal) to the bottom slot. After a few seconds, you’ll get a gold ingot plus some experience points.
Alternative Methods
You can also obtain gold ingots through several other methods:
- Smelting raw gold: If you mine with a Fortune-enchanted pickaxe, you’ll get raw gold instead of ore blocks. Smelt these the same way.
- Crafting from nuggets: Arrange 9 gold nuggets in a 3×3 crafting grid to create one gold ingot.
- Zombie piglin drops: These Nether mobs occasionally drop gold nuggets or ingots when killed.
- Treasure chests: Look for gold ingots in dungeon chests, mineshafts, desert temples, and other generated structures.
What You Can Make
Gold ingots are essential for crafting powered rails, golden apples, clocks, and various golden tools and armor. While golden tools break quickly, they mine faster than diamond tools and have high enchantability.
You can also trade gold ingots with piglins in the Nether for useful items, or craft them into blocks for compact storage. Whether you’re building elaborate redstone contraptions or preparing for Nether exploration, mastering gold production opens up exciting gameplay possibilities.
TL;DR
Smelt gold ore in a furnace with fuel to create gold ingots. You can also craft 9 gold nuggets into 1 ingot or find them in chests and mob drops.
