Mini Chess packs 25 chess variants onto boards ranging from 4×4 to 6×6, turning each match into a sharp tactical duel that wraps up in a few minutes. The lineup includes well-known compact forms such as Gardner, Los Alamos, and Petty Chess, alongside original layouts designed for the game. Several scenes show a grid of sixteen squares alternating between light tan and medium brown. Across those views, the pieces — kings, queens, rooks, and pawns — appear in cream and dark teal pixel-art style.

Every board comes with a short historical note, and an in-game rules card spells out exactly what applies to that variant. Four difficulty levels, an undo option, and support for both Korean and English round out the package. Beat the AI, collect stars, and climb the leaderboard.

How to Play Mini Chess: Beat the AI to Unlock and Earn Stars

White always moves first, and that is the side you control. Tap any piece to reveal its legal moves, then tap a highlighted square to complete the move. The winning condition is capturing the enemy king or delivering checkmate.

Board Rules and Pawn Behavior

Each board has its own starting layout, so checking the Rules button before playing tells you whether pawns may double-step on that variant and what counts as a draw. Pawns promote upon reaching the last rank. There is no castling and no en passant in any variant.

Unlocks and Stars

Winning once on a board unlocks the next board in its group. Clearing the same board on a higher difficulty earns additional stars, and the leaderboard ranks players by total stars collected.

Controls

• Tap a piece: Highlights all legal moves available to that piece
• Tap a highlighted square: Moves the selected piece to that square
• Rules button: Opens the in-game rules card for the current board
• Undo: Reverses the last move
