How to Play Checkmate: Checkmate the White King as Black

Standard chess rules govern every position in Checkmate, with a few important exceptions that define the experience.

• The player controls the Black pieces and must checkmate the White king.
• The Black king may or may not be present on the board depending on the map.
• Black moves from the bottom of the board toward the top, while White moves from top to bottom — a distinction that matters especially for pawn movement and captures.
