Special Villager Types

Nitwit: Green-robed villagers who cannot take jobs or trade. They serve no functional purpose but add village atmosphere. You can identify them by their green clothing and inability to pathfind to workstations.

Unemployed: Brown-robed villagers without assigned professions. These villagers can claim workstations and become working villagers when job blocks are placed nearby during daytime hours.

How Villager Professions Work

Unemployed villagers automatically claim the nearest unclaimed workstation during work hours (2000-9000 game ticks). Once employed, they develop a trade menu with up to five tiers of increasingly valuable exchanges. Breaking their workstation removes their profession, but they retain their trades if you’ve traded with them before.

Each profession offers unique items that make certain villagers more valuable than others. Librarians provide enchanted books, clerics offer rare materials like ender pearls, and cartographers sell treasure maps leading to valuable structures.

Whether you’re building an automated trading hall or just want to understand your village neighbors better, knowing these villager types opens up countless possibilities for your Minecraft adventures.

TL;DR

Minecraft has 15 villager types: 13 working professions (armorer, butcher, cartographer, cleric, farmer, fisherman, fletcher, leatherworker, librarian, mason, shepherd, toolsmith, weaponsmith), plus nitwits and unemployed villagers.
