What You Need to Respawn the Ender Dragon
To bring back the Ender Dragon after defeating it once, you’ll need four End Crystals. These aren’t lying around waiting for you – you have to craft them yourself using some pretty specific materials.
Crafting End Crystals
Each End Crystal requires:
- 7 Glass blocks
- 1 Eye of Ender
- 1 Ghast Tear
The glass is straightforward – just smelt sand in a furnace. Eyes of Ender come from combining Blaze Powder with Ender Pearls. Ghast Tears are the tricky part since you need to hunt Ghasts in the Nether, and they don’t always drop tears when killed.
Setting Up the Respawn
Once you have your four End Crystals, head to the End dimension and locate the bedrock fountain where you originally fought the dragon. You’ll see four sides of this fountain, each with a flat bedrock surface.
Place one End Crystal on each of the four sides of the bedrock fountain. The moment you place the fourth crystal, they’ll start shooting beams toward the center and regenerate the dragon along with all the obsidian pillars you may have destroyed during your first fight.
Why Respawn the Dragon?
Beyond the satisfaction of another epic battle, respawning the Ender Dragon serves practical purposes. Each time you defeat it again, you get another Dragon Egg (though only one can exist in your world at a time) and substantial experience points. More importantly, you can farm End Crystals from the regenerated obsidian pillars for other projects.
What Resets When You Respawn
When the dragon respawns, several things reset in the End:
- All obsidian pillars regenerate with their End Crystals
- The exit portal closes and becomes inactive
- Any blocks you placed get cleared from the main island
This means you’ll need to re-destroy those crystals on top of the pillars before engaging the dragon, just like your first fight. The dragon itself behaves identically to the original encounter, so your combat strategies remain the same.

TL;DR
Craft 4 End Crystals using glass, Eyes of Ender, and Ghast Tears, then place them on the four sides of the bedrock fountain in the End to respawn the dragon.
