Hanging Lanterns from the Ceiling

To hang a lantern from above in Minecraft, you need to place it underneath a solid block. Simply hold your lantern and right-click (or tap on mobile) on the bottom face of any solid block like stone, wood, or even glass. The lantern will automatically attach and dangle below the block, creating that classic hanging effect.

This works with most solid blocks, but remember that the lantern needs something sturdy to hang from. Transparent blocks like glass panes or iron bars won’t support a hanging lantern.

Placing Lanterns on Surfaces

You can also place lanterns directly on top of solid blocks by right-clicking the top surface. This creates a standing lantern rather than a hanging one. The lantern will sit firmly on the block and provide the same 15 light level as a hanging version.

Wall Mounting Limitations

Unlike torches, lanterns cannot be placed directly on walls or vertical surfaces. They can only hang from above or sit on top of blocks. If you want wall-mounted lighting, you’ll need to use torches, wall torches, or create a small ledge for your lantern to sit on.

Creative Hanging Solutions

For more decorative hanging setups, try these techniques:

  • Use fence posts or iron bars as hanging points for a more industrial look
  • Place lanterns under stairs for subtle lighting
  • Hang them from the underside of slabs for lower ceiling lighting
  • Create chains using iron bars to make lanterns appear to hang lower

These lighting techniques work perfectly whether you’re building in survival mode or exploring creative possibilities in your Minecraft worlds.

TL;DR

Hang lanterns by right-clicking the bottom of solid blocks. They can’t attach to walls, only hang from above or sit on top of surfaces.
