What gameplay metrics determine game revenue on web portals?

Web game ad revenue is driven by how many ad requests a session generates (sessions, playtime, natural pause points), what share get filled, which ad formats are used, and player geography. Revenue = ad requests x fill rate x eCPM / 1000.

Revenue on a web portal is not driven by any single gameplay stat directly – it’s driven by how gameplay generates ad opportunities, and how many of those get filled at what rate. The chain is: ad requests (how often your game asks for an ad, tied to session count, session length and how many natural pauses you build in) x fill rate (impressions / ad requests) x eCPM (revenue per thousand impressions). Playgama’s ad documentation gives the working formula: revenue = ad requests x fill rate x eCPM / 1000, and separately tracks match rate and show rate so you can see where requests are lost. See playgama.com/adv for the full metric definitions.

What actually moves the numbers

  • Session structure – more natural pause points (level end, death, menu return) mean more ad requests per session, but stacking too many hurts retention and thus future sessions.
  • Format mix – full-screen interstitial and rewarded formats earn several times more per impression than banners.
  • Geo mix – Tier-1 traffic earns several times more per impression than other geos; where you distribute the game matters as much as how you monetize it.
  • Fill and match rate – if a large share of requests return no ad, format placement or demand setup needs fixing before you look at gameplay changes.

For direct integration options, Google’s H5 Games Ads (via AdSense, application required) calls adBreak() at pause points; AdinPlay, Playwire, Venatus and AppLixir are other ad platforms serving HTML5 games. Portals like Poki, CrazyGames, GameDistribution, itch.io and playgama.com are distribution options worth comparing for reach.

Does a higher DAU always mean higher ad revenue?

Not on its own. Revenue depends on ad requests per session, fill rate and eCPM, so a smaller audience with strong session depth and Tier-1 geo can outearn a larger low-engagement one.

Should I add more ad breaks to increase revenue?

Only at natural pauses. Google caps frequency automatically, and excessive breaks hurt retention, which lowers future ad requests overall.
