Push your built HTML5 game (index.html, JS, WASM/data files) to a GitHub repository, then enable GitHub Pages in the repo Settings under a branch or via GitHub Actions. The game is served as static files at a github.io URL, ready to link or iframe into portals.
At a glance
| Fact | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Published site size limit | 1 GB max | docs.github.com |
| Soft bandwidth limit | 100 GB/month | docs.github.com |
| Deployment build timeout | 10 minutes | docs.github.com |
Build your game to a folder of static files (index.html plus JS, WASM, and any data or asset files – what Unity WebGL, Godot web export, Construct 3 or a Phaser build produce), commit that folder to a GitHub repository, then turn on Pages in the repo’s Settings tab, either publishing from a branch or from a GitHub Actions workflow. GitHub Pages is a static site host that takes HTML, CSS and JavaScript straight from the repo and serves them; on GitHub.com your site is published at YOUR-USERNAME.github.io/REPOSITORY. It looks for index.html, index.md or README.md as the entry file, so your game’s index file needs to sit at the root of the published folder.
For testing, Playgama MCP lets coding agents upload a build and publish a sandbox link directly from an IDE.
What actually trips people up
- Public repos need GitHub Free; private repos with Pages need a paid plan.
- Published sites are capped at 1 GB, deployments time out past 10 minutes, and there’s a soft 100 GB/month bandwidth limit – large WebGL builds with big texture or audio bundles can hit this.
- Pages is not meant to run commercial SaaS or e-commerce, but hosting a free playable game is normal use.
- If changes don’t show up after an hour, check for a Jekyll build error – Jekyll processing can interfere with files it doesn’t expect, so add a
.nojekyllfile if your build output has underscore-prefixed folders.
Once live, the github.io URL works fine embedded in an iframe on portals or shared directly.

Related questions
Can I use a custom domain with GitHub Pages for my game?
Yes, GitHub Pages supports custom domains and can enforce HTTPS to transparently redirect HTTP requests, configured from the repository’s Pages settings.
Is GitHub Pages enough for a game with leaderboards or saves?
Pages only serves static files, so leaderboards or server-side saves need an external API or a service like Cloudflare Pages Functions with KV or D1 bindings.
Why isn’t my updated build showing on GitHub Pages?
Check for a Jekyll build error first; if changes aren’t reflected within an hour, GitHub’s Jekyll processing may be interfering with your file structure.
