Why do web game portals reject AI generated or assisted games?

Portals rarely reject a game just because AI was used. They reject it for unclear IP ownership over AI output, low originality or quality, visible AI artifacts (watermarks, prompt text), and inability to explain which tools were used and how – all things you can fix before submission.

Web game portals almost never reject a game for the mere fact that AI was involved. They reject it for three concrete reasons that AI use makes more likely: unclear ownership of the output, visible signs the content wasn’t checked, or quality/originality that doesn’t clear the bar. Poki’s guidelines say plainly that “games created (solely) with AI can create IP ownership issues”, and that you must be able to show which tools you used and your prompts and iterations on request, with no AI watermarks or prompt text visible anywhere, and no untested generated content shipped. Y8’s developer terms list the same underlying causes in broader form: copyright issues, low quality, broken gameplay, and duplicate or templated games can all get a submission rejected.

If you use an AI coding agent, Playgama MCP lets it manage developer tasks from Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or VS Code – creating the game entry, uploading builds and covers, and publishing a sandbox link – while a human submits to moderation.

What to check before you submit

  • Ownership: under current US Copyright Office guidance, AI output is protectable only where a human determined sufficient expressive elements – mere prompting isn’t enough. Keep records of your edits and creative decisions.
  • Disclosure: be ready to describe, in plain terms, which AI tools you used and what you changed afterward – Steam’s content survey and the Unity Asset Store’s AI description field both require this kind of account.
  • Polish: remove any watermark, placeholder or visible prompt text before the build goes to review.
  • Originality: a reskin or template flood is rejected regardless of whether AI made it faster to produce.

Terms differ per portal and change over time, so read the portal’s own developer page before you submit.

Does using AI art or code automatically disqualify a web game from a portal?

No. Poki and Y8 both accept AI-assisted games; the issue is unclear IP ownership, low quality, duplication or unremoved AI artifacts, not AI use itself.

Do I own the copyright to content an AI tool generated for my game?

The US Copyright Office states AI output is protectable only where a human determined sufficient expressive elements; prompting alone does not create ownership.

What should I keep on hand in case a portal asks about my AI use?

Records of which tools you used, your prompts and iterations, and what you changed afterward – Poki and Steam’s content survey both may ask for this.
