Which browsers and mobile devices properly support Unity 6 WebGL?

Unity 6 WebGL runs in current desktop and mobile browsers that support WebGL2, but real playability depends on the device’s GPU, CPU and memory, not just the browser. Test on actual phones and tablets, not only desktop Chrome, before shipping.

Unity 6 WebGL builds run in any browser that implements WebGL2, which covers current Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge on desktop and mobile – but as noted on MDN, browser support is only part of the requirement because the user’s device must also have hardware that supports WebGL A browser reporting WebGL2 support doesn’t guarantee your build runs smoothly; low-end phones and older tablets often fail on memory or shader complexity even when the API itself is present.

If you’re shipping the same WebGL build to several platforms, wrapping it with Playgama Bridge lets you handle platform differences (ads, storage, payments) through one API instead of writing separate integration code for each site.

What to check before release

  • Check the Unity manual’s Web page for the current list of supported build settings; Unity documents Web as an officially supported platform.
  • Use WebGL Stats-style compatibility data to gauge real-world WebGL2 coverage across browsers and OS versions.
  • Test on actual mobile hardware, not just desktop Chrome scaled down – mobile GPUs and CPUs are far more constrained, so a build that runs at 60fps on a laptop may stutter badly on a mid-range phone.
  • Reduce texture sizes, shader complexity and initial download size specifically for mobile; Godot’s web export guide makes the same point about mobile CPU/GPU being ‘at a premium.’
  • If you need to call browser APIs from Unity (device detection, storage, ad SDKs), use a .jslib plugin as described in the Unity browser scripting manual.

Does Unity 6 WebGL work on iOS Safari?

Yes if Safari supports WebGL2 on that iOS version, but memory limits on mobile Safari are tighter than desktop, so test load size and texture memory on real iPhones.

Why does my WebGL build run in the browser but lag on phones?

The browser reports WebGL2 support, but mobile CPU and GPU are far weaker than desktop; reduce shader complexity, texture size and draw calls for mobile builds.
