What Sweeping Edge Does in Minecraft

Sweeping Edge is a sword enchantment that increases the damage dealt by sweep attacks. When you attack with a sword in Java Edition, you automatically perform a sweep attack that hits multiple enemies within range. Without Sweeping Edge, this sweep attack only deals 1 damage point to nearby mobs. With the enchantment, sweep damage increases significantly.

Damage Increase by Level

Enchantment Level Sweep Damage
Sweeping Edge I 50% of sword damage + 1
Sweeping Edge II 67% of sword damage + 1
Sweeping Edge III 75% of sword damage + 1

How Sweep Attacks Work

Sweep attacks happen automatically when you hit an enemy with a sword while:

  • Standing on the ground (not jumping or falling)
  • Not sprinting
  • Not riding a horse or other mount
  • Your attack cooldown is fully recharged

The sweep hits all entities within a 1-block radius in front of you, except the main target. You’ll see particle effects when a sweep attack occurs.

Important Limitations

Sweeping Edge only exists in Java Edition – Bedrock Edition doesn’t have sweep attacks at all. The enchantment works with any sword type and stacks with other sword enchantments like Sharpness or Smite. However, it doesn’t affect the main target of your attack, only the additional enemies caught in the sweep.

This enchantment proves especially useful when fighting groups of mobs like zombies or skeletons, making crowd control much more effective. For players who enjoy combat-focused gameplay, exploring different enchantment combinations can really enhance your Minecraft experience.

TL;DR

Sweeping Edge increases sweep attack damage from 1 to up to 75% of your sword’s damage plus 1. Only works in Java Edition when performing ground-based sword attacks.
