Flowers Are the Primary Food Source

Minecraft bees have a simple diet – they eat nectar from flowers. Any flower block in the game will work, including roses, dandelions, poppies, blue orchids, alliums, azure bluets, tulips, oxeye daisies, cornflowers, lily of the valley, wither roses, sunflowers, lilacs, rose bushes, and peonies. Bees will fly around looking for these colorful blocks and land on them to collect nectar.

How Bees Feed and Pollinate

When a bee finds a flower, it will hover over it and collect nectar for about 30 seconds. During this time, you’ll see small white particles around the bee, indicating it’s feeding. After collecting nectar, the bee becomes “pollinated” – you can tell because it will have a slightly different texture with visible pollen particles on its body.

Pollinated bees will then return to their nest or hive to convert the nectar into honey. This process takes about 2 minutes of in-game time. Once they’ve deposited the honey, they’ll head back out to find more flowers to repeat the cycle.

Feeding Bees Manually

You can also feed bees directly by holding any flower in your hand. Right-click on a bee while holding a flower, and it will consume the flower immediately. This is particularly useful for:

  • Healing injured bees (restores 1 health point)
  • Breeding bees to create baby bees
  • Making bees enter “love mode” for reproduction
  • Encouraging bees to stay in a specific area

Special Considerations

Interestingly, bees can even collect nectar from wither roses, despite these flowers being harmful to most other mobs. However, the bee will take damage from the wither effect while feeding on these dark flowers, so it’s not recommended if you want to keep your bees healthy.

Bees won’t eat anything other than flowers – they ignore crops, grass, leaves, or any other plant matter. They’re quite specialized in their dietary needs, making flower gardens essential for any bee-keeping operation in your Minecraft world.

Understanding bee nutrition helps you create thriving apiaries and sustainable honey production systems in your builds.

TL;DR

Minecraft bees eat nectar from any flower blocks in the game. You can also hand-feed them flowers to heal, breed, or encourage them to stay in specific areas.
