The Three Main Portal Types in Minecraft PE

Minecraft Pocket Edition features three distinct portal types that can transport you to different dimensions, each serving unique gameplay purposes and requiring specific materials to construct.

Nether Portal

The most commonly used portal requires obsidian blocks arranged in a rectangular frame (minimum 4×5, maximum 23×23). You’ll need at least 10 obsidian blocks for the basic frame, then ignite it with flint and steel or fire charges. This purple, swirling gateway transports you to the Nether dimension, where you can find unique resources like nether quartz, blaze rods, and nether wart.

End Portal

Unlike the Nether portal, End portals cannot be crafted in survival mode. You must locate a stronghold underground and find the End portal room, which contains a 12-block frame made of End portal blocks. Each frame block needs an Eye of Ender placed in it to activate the portal. Once all 12 eyes are inserted, the portal opens with a starry, dark appearance that leads to the End dimension where you’ll face the Ender Dragon.

Exit Portal

The Exit portal appears automatically in the End dimension after defeating the Ender Dragon. This bedrock structure with a dragon egg on top serves as your return route to the Overworld. Unlike other portals, you cannot build or modify this one – it’s generated by the game as part of the End’s completion sequence.

Portal Mechanics and Limitations

Each portal type has specific size requirements and activation methods. Nether portals can be built in various rectangular sizes, while End portals have a fixed 3×3 opening surrounded by the frame blocks. The Exit portal is always the same size and cannot be altered.

Understanding these three portal types will help you navigate Minecraft PE’s dimensional travel system and access all the unique resources each dimension offers.

TL;DR

Minecraft PE has three portal types: Nether portals (built with obsidian), End portals (found in strongholds), and Exit portals (appear after beating the Ender Dragon).
