Using the /gamemode Command
The fastest way to switch to creative mode is through the chat command. Press T to open chat, then type /gamemode creative
and hit Enter. You can also use the shorthand version /gamemode c
or /gamemode 1
for quicker access.
Enabling Cheats First
Commands only work if cheats are enabled in your world. When creating a new world, toggle “Allow Cheats” to ON in the world settings. For existing worlds without cheats, you’ll need to open the world to LAN with cheats enabled or use external tools to modify the world file.
Alternative Methods
World Settings Menu
In single-player worlds, pause the game and click “Open to LAN.” Enable “Allow Cheats” and start the LAN world. You can now use gamemode commands even in single-player.
Server Commands
On multiplayer servers, you need operator (OP) permissions to change gamemodes. Server admins can grant these permissions or change your gamemode directly using /gamemode creative [playername]
.
Quick Gamemode Switching
Once cheats are active, you can rapidly switch between modes:
/gamemode survival
or/gamemode s
/gamemode creative
or/gamemode c
/gamemode adventure
or/gamemode a
/gamemode spectator
(Java Edition only)
Creative mode gives you unlimited resources, flight ability, and instant block breaking – perfect for building massive structures or testing redstone contraptions without resource constraints.
TL;DR
Type /gamemode creative in chat to switch to creative mode. Cheats must be enabled in your world settings first.
