Natural Spawning in The End

The Ender Dragon spawns automatically when you first enter The End dimension. To reach The End, you’ll need to locate a stronghold using Eyes of Ender, then activate the End portal by placing 12 Eyes of Ender in the portal frame blocks. Once you step through, the dragon will be waiting for you in the central island.

Respawning the Dragon After Defeat

After killing the Ender Dragon, you can bring it back to life using End Crystals. Here’s what you need:

  • 4 End Crystals (crafted with 7 glass blocks, 1 ghast tear, and 1 eye of ender each)
  • Access to the End portal that appears after the dragon’s death

Place one End Crystal on each side of the bedrock portal structure in the center of The End. The crystals will create beams of light, and after a few seconds, the dragon will respawn with full health.

Using Commands to Summon

If you have cheats enabled, you can instantly spawn the Ender Dragon with commands:

  • Java Edition: /summon minecraft:ender_dragon
  • Bedrock Edition: /summon ender_dragon

You can add coordinates after the command to specify exactly where the dragon appears. Keep in mind that summoning the dragon outside The End might cause unexpected behavior or crashes.

Important Tips

The respawned dragon behaves identically to the original, including regenerating the End Crystals on the obsidian pillars. However, defeating a respawned dragon only gives you experience points – no additional dragon egg or End gateway portals. The dragon egg only appears after your very first victory.

Whether you’re planning your first End expedition or looking to farm dragon’s breath, these methods will help you face this ultimate boss whenever you’re ready for the challenge.

TL;DR

The Ender Dragon spawns naturally when you first enter The End. After defeating it, respawn the dragon by placing 4 End Crystals around the bedrock portal, or use commands if cheats are enabled.
