Finding an End Portal
To reach the End in Minecraft, you’ll need to locate an End Portal within a stronghold. These underground structures spawn randomly throughout your world, typically between 1,000-3,000 blocks from your spawn point. The most efficient way to find one is by using Eyes of Ender as your compass.
Crafting Eyes of Ender
You’ll need two key ingredients:
- Ender Pearls – Dropped by Endermen when killed (about 50% drop rate)
- Blaze Powder – Crafted from Blaze Rods obtained by defeating Blazes in Nether fortresses
Combine one Ender Pearl with one Blaze Powder in your crafting grid to create an Eye of Ender. You’ll want at least 12-15 Eyes total – some for navigation and others to activate the portal.
Following the Eyes
Right-click while holding an Eye of Ender to throw it into the air. It will float in the direction of the nearest stronghold before falling to the ground. Follow its path and repeat this process, moving closer each time. When the Eye starts falling straight down instead of traveling horizontally, you’ve found your stronghold location.
Digging Down Safely
Start digging around Y-level 40 where strongholds typically generate. Dig carefully in a staircase pattern to avoid falling into lava or cave systems. Once you break into the stronghold’s stone brick corridors, explore systematically to locate the End Portal room.
Activating the Portal
The End Portal frame consists of 12 blocks arranged in a 3×3 square with the corners removed. Some frames may already have Eyes of Ender placed in them, but you’ll likely need to fill the remaining slots. Stand inside the frame and place Eyes of Ender in each empty slot – this prevents accidentally activating the portal while standing outside.
Once all 12 slots contain Eyes of Ender, the portal will activate with a distinctive sound and visual effect. The center will fill with a dark, starry void. Simply walk into this portal to transport yourself to the End dimension.
Creative Mode Shortcut
In Creative mode, you can build your own End Portal using End Portal Frame blocks from the creative inventory. Arrange them in the proper formation and fill with Eyes of Ender, or simply use the search function to find existing strongholds much faster since you can fly and break blocks instantly.
