Finding Your Minecraft Mods Folder on Windows

The quickest way to access your Minecraft mods folder on Windows is by pressing Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, then typing %appdata% and hitting Enter. This opens your AppData folder. Navigate to .minecraft and you’ll find the mods folder inside.

If the mods folder doesn’t exist yet, simply create a new folder and name it “mods” (without quotes). This happens when you haven’t installed Forge or Fabric yet, which are required mod loaders for most Minecraft mods.

Alternative Windows Methods

You can also manually navigate by opening File Explorer and going to:

C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\mods

Replace [YourUsername] with your actual Windows username. If AppData is hidden, enable “Show hidden files” in File Explorer’s View tab.

Mac Users: Locating the Mods Folder

On Mac, open Finder and press Command + Shift + G to open “Go to Folder.” Type:

~/Library/Application Support/minecraft

The mods folder should be inside the minecraft directory. Create it if it’s missing.

Through Minecraft Launcher

Another reliable method works across all platforms: open the Minecraft Launcher, click on “Installations,” hover over your modded profile, click the three dots, and select “Open Folder.” This takes you directly to that installation’s directory where the mods folder is located.

Important Notes for Mod Installation

Remember that you need either Forge or Fabric installed before the mods folder becomes functional. Simply dropping mods into the folder won’t work with vanilla Minecraft. Also, ensure your mods match your Minecraft version – a 1.19 mod won’t work with 1.20.

Once you’ve located your mods folder, you can start exploring the vast world of Minecraft modifications and custom gameplay experiences.

TL;DR

Access Minecraft mods folder on Windows by pressing Win+R, typing %appdata%, then navigating to .minecraft/mods. On Mac, use Cmd+Shift+G and go to ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft.
