Building Your First Nether Portal

Creating a Nether portal requires 10-14 obsidian blocks and a way to ignite it. You’ll need to mine obsidian with a diamond or netherite pickaxe, or create it by pouring water over lava source blocks.

What You Need

  • 10 obsidian blocks (minimum) or 14 blocks (full frame)
  • Flint and steel, fire charge, or any fire source
  • Diamond or netherite pickaxe for mining obsidian

Step-by-Step Construction

Start by placing obsidian blocks in a rectangular frame. The minimum size is 4 blocks wide by 5 blocks tall, but you can build it 4×5 on the inside (requiring 14 obsidian) or save materials by skipping the corner blocks (needing only 10).

Place two obsidian blocks vertically, then add two more blocks on top to create a pillar that’s 4 blocks high. Repeat this process 4 blocks away to create the second pillar. Connect the tops with 2 horizontal obsidian blocks, then add 2 blocks along the bottom to complete your frame.

Lighting the Portal

Right-click anywhere inside the obsidian frame with flint and steel. The portal will activate with a distinctive purple swirling effect and ambient sounds. If it doesn’t light, double-check that your frame is complete and properly sized.

Portal Mechanics and Tips

Your portal links to the Nether at coordinates roughly 1:8 ratio – every block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. This makes Nether travel incredibly efficient for long-distance transportation.

Multiple portals can exist, but they’ll try to link to the nearest corresponding portal. If you’re building multiple portals, space them at least 128 blocks apart in the Overworld to prevent linking issues.

TL;DR

Build a 4×5 obsidian frame using 10-14 blocks, then light it with flint and steel to create a Nether portal. The portal transports you to the Nether dimension for fast travel and unique resources.
