Start with Basic Shapes
Drawing Minecraft characters is easier than you might think because everything is made of simple cubes and rectangles. Begin by sketching a large square for the head, then add a rectangular body below it. The beauty of Minecraft’s blocky style means you don’t need perfect proportions or smooth curves.
Build the Head and Face
Draw a square that’s slightly wider than it is tall for Steve’s iconic head. Inside this square, create the face using simple geometric shapes:
- Two small dark squares for eyes, positioned in the upper third
- A thin horizontal rectangle for the nose, centered below the eyes
- A small curved line for the mouth
- Add some shading on the right side and bottom to give the head dimension
Construct the Body
The torso should be a rectangle that’s about 1.5 times the width of the head and roughly the same height. Add Steve’s signature blue shirt by coloring the main body area, leaving space for brown pants at the bottom. Don’t forget to add some simple line details to suggest clothing seams.
Add Arms and Legs
Each arm is a long, thin rectangle extending from the shoulders. Make them slightly bent at the elbows for a more natural pose. The legs are similar rectangles, but thicker than the arms. Remember that Minecraft characters have a distinctive blocky walk, so you can position the legs in a walking stance.
Perfect the Details
Add Steve’s brown hair by drawing small rectangular blocks on top of the head. Include his brown shoes at the bottom of each leg. Use light and shadow to make your drawing pop – add darker shades on the right sides and bottoms of each block to create that authentic 3D Minecraft look.
Once you’ve mastered drawing Steve, you can apply these same techniques to create any Minecraft character, from Alex to custom skins you’ve seen in the game.
TL;DR
Draw Minecraft characters using simple squares and rectangles. Start with a square head, add rectangular body and limbs, then include basic facial features and clothing details with blocky shading.
