Building Your First Nether Portal in Creative Mode
Creating a portal in Minecraft creative mode is straightforward since you have unlimited resources and can fly. You’ll need obsidian blocks and a way to ignite the portal – either flint and steel or a fire charge.
Gathering Materials
In creative mode, open your inventory (E key) and search for:
- Obsidian blocks – You’ll need exactly 10 blocks minimum
- Flint and steel – For lighting the portal
You can also mine obsidian naturally by pouring water over lava source blocks, but in creative mode it’s faster to just grab it from your inventory.
Portal Frame Construction
Build a rectangular frame that’s 4 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall:
- Place 4 obsidian blocks horizontally for the bottom
- Build up 3 blocks on each side (left and right edges)
- Connect the top with 4 more obsidian blocks
The interior opening should be 2 blocks wide by 3 blocks tall. Corner blocks are optional – the portal works without them, so you can save obsidian by using the minimal 10-block design.
Activating the Portal
Right-click any obsidian block in your frame with flint and steel. Purple particles will appear, and the portal will emit a distinctive humming sound. The interior will fill with a swirling purple texture.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Portal won’t light: Double-check your frame dimensions. The opening must be exactly 2×3 blocks, and all obsidian blocks must be properly connected.
Wrong materials: Only obsidian works for Nether portals. Crying obsidian looks similar but won’t function.
Frame shape: The portal must be rectangular. Circular or other shapes won’t activate.
Once lit, simply walk through to enter the Nether dimension. Your portal will remain active until broken or you destroy it with a pickaxe. For more hands-on building practice, explore our collection of creative construction challenges.
TL;DR
Build a 4×5 obsidian frame (10 blocks minimum), then light it with flint and steel. The portal activates instantly in creative mode since you have unlimited resources.
