Gathering Your Materials

To craft a furnace in Minecraft, you’ll need exactly 8 cobblestone blocks. Cobblestone is one of the most common materials you’ll encounter – simply mine any stone block with a wooden pickaxe or better, and it automatically converts to cobblestone. You can find stone everywhere underground, in caves, or even on the surface in mountainous areas.

Opening Your Crafting Table

Once you have your 8 cobblestone blocks, head to a crafting table. If you don’t have one yet, craft it using 4 wooden planks arranged in a 2×2 square in your inventory crafting grid. Right-click the crafting table to open the 3×3 crafting interface.

The Furnace Recipe

Here’s where the magic happens. Place your 8 cobblestone blocks in a specific hollow square pattern:

  • Fill the top row completely (3 cobblestone)
  • Place 1 cobblestone on the left and 1 on the right of the middle row
  • Fill the bottom row completely (3 cobblestone)
  • Leave the center square empty

This creates a ring shape that mimics the hollow interior of a real furnace. Once you place the blocks correctly, a furnace icon will appear in the result box.

Using Your New Furnace

Drag the furnace to your inventory and place it wherever you want in your world. Right-click to open it, and you’ll see three slots: one for items to smelt, one for fuel (like coal or wood), and one for the finished product. Your furnace can cook food, smelt ores into ingots, turn sand into glass, and much more.

TL;DR

Craft a furnace using 8 cobblestone blocks arranged in a hollow square pattern on a crafting table. Place cobblestone in all slots except the center to create this essential smelting tool.
