Taming Wolves First
Before you can breed wolves in Minecraft, you need to tame them. Wild wolves spawn in forest and taiga biomes with white and gray fur. To tame a wolf, hold bones in your hand and right-click (or tap on mobile) the wolf repeatedly. You’ll know it worked when hearts appear above the wolf and it gets a red collar – now it’s officially your dog!
Getting Your Dogs Ready to Breed
Once you have at least two tamed wolves, breeding is straightforward. Both dogs need to be:
- Fully healed (you can feed them meat if they’re injured)
- Not sitting (right-click to make them stand if needed)
- Close to each other
The Breeding Process
Hold any type of meat in your hand – this includes raw beef, pork, chicken, mutton, rabbit, or even rotten flesh. Right-click each dog with the meat, and you’ll see hearts floating above them. When both dogs have hearts, they’ll move toward each other and a puppy will appear!
Important Breeding Facts
The puppy automatically belongs to whoever owns one of the parent dogs. If you’re playing with friends, make sure you’re the one feeding the dogs if you want to own the offspring. After breeding, there’s a 20-minute cooldown before the same pair can breed again.
Puppy Care Tips
Newborn puppies are tiny and adorable but vulnerable. They’ll follow you around just like adult dogs, but they can’t fight mobs effectively until they grow up in about 20 minutes. You can speed up their growth by feeding them meat – each piece of meat reduces the growing time by 10%.

TL;DR
Tame wolves with bones, then feed any meat to two tamed dogs to breed them. Puppies appear after both parents show hearts and take 20 minutes to grow up.
