Postal Cipher
About Postal Cipher
Postal Cipher opens on an evening at the post office. A form sits on the desk with three or four words printed across it, and stamps cover some of the letters. The central rule is elegant: identical stamps always represent the same letter, and that relationship holds across every word on the form simultaneously.
A single short word in isolation could only be guessed, but because the words share one cipher key, cracking a letter in one word immediately reveals that same letter wherever the matching stamp appears elsewhere. From that point the puzzle becomes pure deduction — when two words carry the same stamp in the same position, the range of possible letters narrows further.
Misses are counted, but the evening never ends on a wrong answer. A missed letter costs a star and nothing more; there is no allowance that runs down, and the puzzle runs on until the cipher is fully solved. Three stars are awarded for a clean solve with no misses at all.
The game spans 96 evenings across six weeks. Early puzzles offer three words with roughly half the letters already visible; by the final week you'll find four words, almost nothing is given away, and the rack holds letters the words never actually use.
How to Play Postal Cipher
Select an unsolved stamp on the form, then choose a letter from the rack below. A correct answer drops into place immediately across every word that carries that stamp. A wrong choice registers as a miss, recorded in the readout at the top.
The rack contains spare letters the words do not use, so a blind selection costs stars even though it carries no other penalty. Three tools are available to help when the cipher holds out:
- Loupe: shows which stamp to take on next
- Quill: works out one stamp for you
- Strike-out: removes one spare letter from the rack
Controls
- Tap (phones and tablets): select a stamp or choose a letter from the rack
- Mouse click (computer): select a stamp or choose a letter from the rack
- Tap and drag: all interactions; no keyboard input is needed
