The long way home
About The long way home
The long way home drops you into open space with nothing but a suit, a tank of fuel, and the air already in your lungs — your ship is gone, and Earth is very far away. The game is built around one core tension: thrust costs fuel you may never get back, while drift is free. The fastest line between two points is rarely the right one; swinging past a planet and riding its gravity costs nothing, and that saved fuel may be the only thing that gets you home.
Standing between you and Earth are abandoned supply stations, each holding one decisive resupply. Sealed containers can be cracked open with patience. Debris fields will shred you at speed but let you pass at a crawl. VESTA, the assistance unit strapped to your chest, is a machine and says so — she talks you through the journey and tells you when your heading is wrong.
Several scenes show a white astronaut figure wearing a jetpack, centered against a star-filled black background. In one scene, a celestial body with visible rings hangs in the distant background.
The goal is to reach Earth before the oxygen runs out — and then do it again, this time carrying cargo.
How to Play The long way home
Every control is also an on-screen button, so the game works equally well with a mouse, a keyboard, or a touchscreen. The central challenge is managing fuel: short burns are almost always better than long ones, and gravity assists from planets cost nothing at all. Use SCAN to light up nearby supplies and chart debris fields onto your map before committing to a heading.
Debris fields demand patience: slow down before entering them, not after. Sealed containers at supply stations reward the time spent cracking them open. Once you have made it to Earth, the next run adds cargo to the challenge.
Controls
- DRAG anywhere: Look around and aim
- ENGINE or SPACE: Burns the main thruster — short taps, fuel is finite
- STOP or X: Flips you around and burns retrograde; the only way to slow down
- DRIFT or Z: Lays you flat along your heading, streamlining you and letting you sidestep rock
- ION DRIVE or V: Weak electric thrust that runs on battery instead of fuel
- SCAN or F: Lights up nearby supplies and charts debris fields onto your map
- REPAIR or T: Patches the suit
- TAB or tap the small map: Opens the planning map — pick a destination and your scanner becomes a compass
- AIM ONLY / HOLD = THRUST switch: Changes whether dragging also fires the engine
