About Build Your Backrooms: Maze Landlord with Monsters and Guests

Build Your Backrooms puts you in the role of a landlord presiding over the Backrooms — that liminal sprawl of yellow corridors and humming fluorescent dread. Starting with an empty plot, a little cash, and a single monster in hand, the goal is to grow a maze that people wander into every minute, and that not everyone wanders out of.

Rooms come in a wide variety: yellow corridors and corners, junctions and empty office rooms, flickering hallways, and wet carpet. One scene shows two long yellow rectangular corridors sitting parallel within a roped-off sand-colored area, giving a sense of how the maze takes shape plot by plot. In another moment, a blocky player character with a red hat and black shirt stands amidst piles of scattered blue and brown rectangular debris.

Guests arrive on their own and roam the corridors. The deeper into the maze a visitor travels, the more lost they become — and the more they're worth. Five guest types range from the Newbie to the Tycoon, with each new type appearing only once the plot is sufficiently developed. When the maze grows large and the register grows heavy, a rebirth resets the plot but permanently increases the income multiplier and unlocks a new biome.

How to Play Build Your Backrooms

Build rooms to expand the maze, let guests wander in on their own, and collect value based on how lost each visitor gets. The more rooms a guest passes through, the more they're worth. Develop the plot far enough to attract higher-value guest types, then trigger a rebirth to reset the plot while keeping a permanent income multiplier boost and gaining access to a new biome.

• Move: joystick — touch the left half of the screen and drag your finger
• Look around: swipe on the right half of the screen
• Zoom: pinch
• Select a building: tap a slot in the bottom bar; tapping the slot again frees your hands
• Place or demolish: the round button on the right (shows whatever you're currently holding)
• Rotate a room: the arrow button next to the slot bar
