Backgammon Narde online brings one of the oldest known board games to your browser. Also called Tavla, Backgammon has a history traceable nearly 5,000 years to archaeological discoveries in Mesopotamia. Two players each command fifteen pieces — called checkers or men — moving them across twenty-four triangles, known as points, according to the roll of two dice. The first player to bear all fifteen checkers off the board wins.

Several views of the game show a light-colored wooden board decorated with two identical brown illustrations of a winged feline head facing outward. The board's pointed triangular segments alternate between a plain wood color and a patterned tan design.

How to Play Backgammon Narde online: Move Checkers and Bear Off First

At the start, each player rolls a single die. The player who rolls the higher number earns the right to use both dice for the opening move. Rolling a double number with the pair of dice grants a double move — for example, rolling double two lets a player move two points twice.

Every checker moves forward independently and may land on any point that the opponent has not blocked.

Blocked and Accessible Points

• A point is blocked when the opponent has two or more checkers occupying it.
• A point is accessible if it has no checkers on it, holds only one of the opponent's checkers, or is already occupied by one or more of the moving player's own checkers.

The Middle Bar

Moving a checker onto a point occupied by exactly one of the opponent's checkers sends that opponent's checker to the middle bar. The opponent must re-enter that checker from the bar before making any other moves.
