How to Play Chess Master

The object of the game is to checkmate the opposing king. Each piece type moves differently across the board:

Piece Movements

• Pawn: moves forward one square, or two squares on its first move; captures diagonally one square forward.
• King: moves one square in any direction — vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.
• Queen: moves any distance in all directions.
• Rook: moves any distance vertically or horizontally.
• Knight: moves in an L-shape — two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular, or one square and then two squares perpendicular.
• Bishop: moves any distance diagonally.

Special Moves

• Castling: a double move between a king and a rook that have never moved; the king cannot castle through a threatened square or while in check.
• En Passant: a pawn may capture an opponent's pawn that jumps over a threatened square.
