About Durak: The Most Popular Russian Card Game

Durak is a shedding card game where the goal is simple — get rid of every card in your hand before the other players do. The name itself means "fool" in Russian, and it refers to the last person left holding cards. Far from a niche curiosity, Durak has made an impact on millions of players over the years and stands as the most popular card game in Russia. It rewards critical thinking and suits players who enjoy strategic card play with a twist: you'll find usually multiple winners, and only one loser.

The game runs on a 36-card deck — a standard poker deck trimmed down to cards from 6 through Ace across all four suits. That smaller deck keeps rounds tight and decisions meaningful.

How to Play Durak

Durak supports 2 to 4 players. The deck is shuffled and each player receives 6 cards. The bottom card of the stock is turned face up on the table to establish the trump suit, and the remaining pack is placed over it at right angles so that trump card stays visible throughout the game.

Turn Structure and Roles

  • The player holding the lowest trump card goes first and acts as the attacker.
  • Play moves clockwise, with the player immediately to the attacker's left taking the role of defender.
  • The attacker plays a card face up as the attacking card; the defender must respond with a defending card.
  • A trump card of any rank beats all cards in the other three suits.

Attack and Defense Outcomes

  • If the attack succeeds, the defender loses their turn and the attack passes to the player on the defender's left.
  • If the attack fails, the defender becomes the next attacker.

Winning and Losing

  • Once a player has played all their cards, they are out of the game — a winner.
  • The last player still holding cards is the Durak, the loser.
  • Acting quickly to shed cards is essential to avoiding that final position.
