How to Play Durak

Durak supports 2 to 4 players. The deck is trimmed to 36 cards, keeping only the 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A across all four suits. Each player is dealt 6 cards to start.

Setting Up the Trump Suit

After the deck is shuffled and hands are dealt, the bottom card of the stock is turned face up on the table. The remaining pack is placed halfway over that card at a right angle so the face-up card stays visible. That exposed card determines the trump suit for the round.

Attack and Defense

The player holding the lowest trump card goes first and acts as the attacker. Play moves clockwise, with the player immediately to the attacker's left taking the role of defender. The attacker places a card face up on the table; the defender must respond with a defending card. A trump card of any rank beats every card in the other three suits.

If the attack succeeds, the defender loses their turn and the attack passes to the player on the defender's left. If the attack fails, the defender becomes the next attacker.

Winning and Losing

Once a player has played all their cards, they are out of the game and wait for the remaining players to finish. The last player still holding cards is the Durak — the loser. Acting quickly to shed your hand is the core pressure of every round.
