Codex: The Last Summoner casts you as a dark summoner navigating a world where treasures lie hidden across various locations, each guarded by creatures spawned from darkness. Rather than swinging a sword yourself, you wield rune combinations to conjure dark servants who fight at your side, attack enemies, and strengthen your growing army with unique spells. The game blends roguelite structure, action RPG progression, and dark fantasy atmosphere into a single experience.
The visual style mixes 3D environment models with pixel-art elements — characters, items, and magic animations — rendered in a medieval grimoire style reminiscent of 2000s RPG aesthetics. Several scenes show this layered approach, where hand-crafted pixel characters move through fully modeled surroundings.
Enemies include orcs, goblins, ghosts, and other foul beings, and they grow stronger and more dangerous the longer a run continues. Sound helps detect danger more quickly while softly reinforcing the casual dark-fantasy atmosphere throughout the levels.
Each run asks you to survive waves of incoming enemies without letting them fully deplete your health bar. Defeat enemies, collect the resources they drop, and then return to the temple before it is too late. Back at the temple, unlock new servants and upgrade your sanctuary — improvements there affect your HP and mana reserves for casting spells.
Do not rush straight to the boss. Build your army, improve your abilities, and prepare for the final battle. Defeat the ultimate evil by using powerful summons and the correct rune combinations. As you progress, new rune formulas unlock, allowing you to create stronger warriors and more interesting enhancements for them. All unlocked combinations are viewable in the Codex in the upper-right corner.
Your task is to prevent rushing creatures from completely depleting your health bar while your summoned army deals with them. Each run ends when you return to the temple or fall to the enemy horde.
Press the 1, 2, 3, or 4 keys — or tap the rune icons on screen — to enter combinations that summon dark servants or apply enhancements. Every combination you have unlocked is listed in the Codex panel in the upper-right corner.
New rune formulas become available over time, letting you create stronger warriors and more interesting enhancements. Upgrading the Temple between runs also expands your HP and mana reserves.
Sound helps you detect danger more quickly and respond to it, while also reinforcing the dark-fantasy atmosphere throughout the levels.
Orcs, goblins, ghosts, and other foul beings guard the world's locations. Enemies grow stronger and more dangerous the longer you remain in the world during a run.
