Armadillo Release Timeline

The armadillo was officially added to Minecraft in the 1.21 Tricky Trials update, which released on June 13, 2024. This means the armadillo is already available in the current version of Minecraft across all platforms including Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and Pocket Edition.

What the Armadillo Brings to Minecraft

The armadillo isn’t just another passive mob wandering around your world. When you find one in savanna and badlands biomes, you’ll discover they drop armadillo scutes when brushed with a brush tool. These scutes serve a crucial purpose: crafting wolf armor to protect your loyal canine companions.

Here’s what makes armadillos special:

  • Defensive behavior – They roll into a ball when threatened by players, undead mobs, or when sprinting nearby

  • Scute farming – Brush them periodically to collect armadillo scutes without harming the animal

  • Spider deterrent – Spiders actively avoid armadillos, making them useful for base protection

  • Breeding mechanics – Feed them spider eyes to breed and create baby armadillos

    Finding Armadillos in Your World

Armadillos spawn naturally in warm, dry biomes. You’ll most commonly encounter them in savannas and badlands, where they blend in with the sandy terrain. They’re peaceful creatures that won’t attack you, but they will defensively curl up if you get too close or move too quickly around them.

    Wolf Armor Crafting

The primary reason players seek out armadillos is for wolf armor crafting. You’ll need six armadillo scutes arranged in a specific pattern on your crafting table to create one piece of wolf armor. This armor significantly reduces damage your tamed wolves take from hostile mobs, making them much more viable companions for dangerous adventures.

Since the 1.21 update is already live, you can start exploring savanna biomes today to find these unique creatures and begin protecting your wolf pack with custom armor.

    TL;DR

The armadillo was added to Minecraft in the 1.21 Tricky Trials update on June 13, 2024. Find them in savannas and badlands to collect scutes for crafting wolf armor.
